Shoplifting - short film

Written and directed by Tasmanian Neil Triffett, Shoplifting premieres at the St Kilda Film Festival, 7.30pm Saturday 28 May 2011. Details of the screening are here.





Synopsis: Pete is teaching his youngest son the family business: the art of shoplifting. However, with his eldest son now stealing off the internet and with the introduction of new security devices in department stores, Pete's times seem to be slipping away. As the eldest son begins to take control of the direction the family is heading, 
Pete must work out a way around the new security devices or lose his place in the family entirely.

Screen Tasmania offering 50% subsidy for TV writing course - this weekend!


Screen Tasmania has made four subsidised places available to Tasmanian resident writers for this weekend’s AFTRS “Introduction to Writing for Television” workshop with Vicki Madden. This is your chance to learn techniques from a former writer and story producer of “The Bill”.  Vicki also worked with Lynda La Plante on “Trial and Retribution” and “The Commander”.

Course fee: $350/$315

To apply, email your interest to jane.stapleton@screen.tas.gov.au by 12pm Thursday 26 May, and you will be sent an application form. Please be aware that if you are offered a subsidised place, you will have to pay the full amount to AFTRS and Screen Tasmania will reimburse you for 50% of the cost.

ABC & Screen Australia unite for doco initiative

Screen Australia and ABC TV Documentaries today announced the launch of Opening Shot, a $400,000 initiative that aims to encourage emerging documentary makers and create a prime time series for ABC2.

ABC TV is looking to commission up to six one-off films to form an insightful and entertaining series that will look at contemporary Australian life and appeal to a broad audience.

ABC TV Head of Documentaries, Alan Erson, says, “ABCTV has a strong track record in spotting and nurturing talent and I look forward to working with the next group of emerging documentary makers on this series. ABC2 offers a great opportunity to curate a cohesive body of work while also allowing documentary makers to set the creative agenda.”

Screen Australia’s Documentary Manager, Liz Stevens, says, “Screen Australia has a strong focus on bringing through the next generation of creative storytellers. We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with the ABC in giving opportunities to young Australian talent to tell contemporary stories in their own voices.”

Applicants can apply for up to $80,000 for each half-hour documentary. ‘Emerging’ is defined as the director being 35 or under at 1 July 2011.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday 1 July 2011.

Beaconsfield mine disaster telemovie greenlit

Beaconsfield - a telemovie about the 2006 mine disaster and the rescue of miners Brant Webb and Todd Russell 15 days later - has received production funding from Screen Australia.


No word yet on whether the project will be produced in Tasmania - stay tuned.

Screen Tasmania's 5 year Strategic Plan - Update


SCREEN TASMANIA WELCOMES COMMENT RECEIVED ON DRAFT STRATEGIC PLAN AND PROGRAM OUTLINES

Screen Tasmania would like to thank everyone that took the opportunity to take part in the recent consultation process on the Strategic Plan and Program Outline drafts.
After completing the facilitated discussion process, eighteen written submissions were received representing a wide range of views across the industry.
We are now in the process of finalising the key findings and preparing the final drafts in consultation with the Screen Tasmania Board in readiness for presentation to industry on Friday.
We have committed to this schedule in order to ensure that we have sufficient time for drafting and release of the detailed guidelines ensuring that industry has sufficient time to digest and accommodate these prior to the next funding round closing date.
Once again, thank you to each of you that time out of your busy schedules to provide us with this feedback and we look forward to seeing you on Friday.

Slashed to screen at New York City International Film Festival

After recently winning Best Australian Short Film at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, the Tasmanian short film Slashed! has been selected to screen at the 2nd Annual New York City International Film Festival

Slashed recently screened at the St. Kilda Film Festival and was also selected to be one of seven short films in the My Queer Career Competition!

Another of Director and Producer team Rebecca Thomson and Rogan Brown's films - Cupcake: A Zombie Lesbian Musical - won Best Short Film at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival.
It's so great to see some Tasmanian shorts out there doing really well on the international circuit - exciting times for our little industry!
